Boy Playing CelloThe Small Schools Project is leading the effort to encourage school districts to create smaller high schools across the country.  Their goal is to promote small schools committed to rigorous, relevant learning experiences and powerful relationships that promote student learning.

They have published an outstanding document that details the initial results of a three-year study of seven schools in Washington state.  Knowing and Being Known: Personalization as a Foundation for Student Learning (PDF) documents the first year of the study.  The overview provides a look at the changing relationships amongst students and teachers, the support needed to make personalization work, and other developments as the schools undergo significant changes.

From Knowing and Being Known:

Again and again, educational writers and researchers emphasize that the context provided by smallness invites teachers and students to know and trust one another. Research and practice point to the size of a learning community as a core factor, demonstrating that small schools are more likely to create the right conditions for student connection, equity, and high achievement.

AEG is committed to creating small schools with the right conditions for personalized learning and strong relationships.
